Split-Complementary Color Scheme: Safer Than Complementary The split-complementary scheme is a practical modification of the direct complementary relationship. Instead of taking the color directly opposite on the wheel, you take the two colors adjacent to the complement — flanking it on either side, typically 30° away from each.
